Long Answer Questions (6 × 4 = 24 marks) – Latest Pre-Board Questions

Q. Describe the role of Rajkumar Shukla in Gandhi’s struggle in Champaran. (Indigo – 6 marks)
Answer (145 words):
Rajkumar Shukla was a poor, illiterate sharecropper from Champaran who became the reason Gandhi visited the district. He had come to Lucknow Congress session to complain about the injustice of the landlord system. He requested Gandhi to fix a date to visit Champaran. When Gandhi was busy, Shukla followed him everywhere – to Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Calcutta and even to Gandhi’s ashram. His persistence forced Gandhi to agree.

In Champaran, Shukla accompanied Gandhi to villages, introduced him to peasants and helped collect facts. Without Shukla’s determination and patience, Gandhi might never have gone to Champaran, and the historic indigo movement would not have taken place. Thus, a simple farmer became the instrument of India’s first civil disobedience movement.
