Subject: Alarming rise in screen addiction among children
Sir/Madam,
Through your esteemed newspaper, I wish to express deep concern over the uncontrolled screen time of children today. A recent survey states that Indian children aged 8–18 spend an average of 6–7 hours daily on phones, tablets and laptops.
Excessive screen exposure is causing eyesight problems, poor posture, lack of physical activity and obesity. More dangerous are the effects on mental health – anxiety, depression, cyber bullying and disturbed sleep cycles. Children are losing creativity and social skills because they prefer reels over real friends.
Parents must enforce strict “no-phone zones” during meals and bedtime. Schools should conduct digital detox workshops. The government must run nationwide awareness campaigns like it did for COVID precautions. Only collective efforts can save our children from becoming screen slaves.
Yours truly

Short Answer Questions (2 × 5 = 10 marks)
Q. Why is Saheb’s name ironic?
Answer: Saheb’s full name is Saheb-e-Alam, meaning “Lord of the Universe”. Ironically, he is a poor rag-picker who roams barefoot, scavenging garbage for survival. The name highlights the cruel contrast between his grand title and miserable reality.
Q. What message does Jack want to convey through the story in “Should Wizard Hit Mommy”?
Answer: Jack wants to teach Jo that parents and elders are always right, and children should accept reality. He believes unpleasant endings (like the skunk smelling bad) are part of life and mothers know best.
Long Answer Questions (6 × 4 = 24 marks)
Q. How does Derry’s attitude change by the end of “On the Face of It”? (6 marks)
Answer (144 words):
Initially, Derry is bitter, angry and withdrawn because of his burnt face. He believes people either pity or fear him, so he avoids everyone. He enters Mr Lamb’s garden thinking it is empty and hates sympathy.
Mr Lamb’s open, positive attitude shakes Derry. Lamb shares that he too is handicapped but never lets it define him. He keeps his gate open, talks to people, bees and ideas. This inspires Derry. When his mother tries to stop him from returning, Derry defies her for the first time. He runs back only to find Mr Lamb dead, yet he does not run away in fear. Instead, he stays to help – showing he has accepted life and overcome his self-pity. Mr Lamb’s death becomes the final lesson: live fully despite everything.
