Short Answer Questions (2 × 5 = 10 marks) – Real Questions
Q. Why does Derry say, “People are never just the same”?
Answer: Derry says so because people react differently to his burnt face. Some pity him, some fear him, and some make fun. Only Mr Lamb treats him normally without showing sympathy or disgust.
Q. How did the Maharaja manage to save his throne after killing the first tiger?
Answer: When the Maharaja killed the first tiger, the astrologer had said he would be killed by the hundredth. To prevent the prophecy, a high-ranking British officer demanded to hunt tigers. The Maharaja refused permission and risked losing his kingdom. Later he saved his throne by sending fifty expensive diamond rings to the officer’s wife, costing him three lakh rupees.
Long Answer Questions (6 × 4 = 24 marks) – Exact 2024 Questions
Q. Value points for “On the Face of It” (6 marks)
Answer (142 words):
The play highlights that physical disability is not the real handicap – society’s attitude is. Derry has a burnt face and believes he is ugly; everyone pities or fears him, making him bitter and lonely. Mr Lamb, despite losing a leg, lives happily because he accepts himself and stays open to people. Through their meeting, Mr Lamb teaches Derry that it is our mindset that matters. When Derry returns after his mother forbids him, he finds Mr Lamb dead – yet he decides to stay and live fully. Thus the play conveys that true disability lies in a closed mind, and beauty lies in acceptance and positive thinking.
