5. Article Writing (6 marks) – Shiv Nadar Noida Pre-Board 2025

Write an article on “Importance of Voting in a Democracy” (150–200 words).

Answer (172 words – full marks)
Let Your Vote Count
By Kavya Mehta, Class XII

Democracy is described as “government of the people, by the people, for the people”. The most powerful tool a citizen has in a democracy is the vote. Yet, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, urban voter turnout was below 60% while many youngsters proudly displayed “I don’t vote” attitudes on social media.

Voting is not just a choice; it is a responsibility. Every vote decides who will make laws, allocate budgets for schools and hospitals, and shape foreign policy. When educated youth abstain, they allow others to decide their future. History shows that low voter turnout helps extremist and corrupt elements win.

Countries like Australia have made voting compulsory. In India, NOTA got more votes than some candidates in many constituencies – a clear sign of frustration. The solution is simple: register at 18, check your name in the voter list and cast your vote on polling day. One vote can change the destiny of 140 crore Indians. Make it count!

Q. What is the central idea of the poem “A Thing of Beauty”?
Answer: A thing of beauty is a constant source of joy. It never fades; instead, it grows richer with time. Nature, noble deeds, and art provide an escape from the harsh realities of life and give us hope and peace.

Long Answer Questions (6 × 4 = 24 marks)

Q. Describe Franz’s emotions when he reached school on the day of the last lesson. (The Last Lesson – 6 marks)
Answer (138 words):
Franz started late for school and was scared of M. Hamel’s scolding because he was unprepared for the test on participles. He thought of bunking school but finally decided to go. When he reached, everything was unusually quiet. He was surprised to see villagers sitting on back benches and M. Hamel in his Sunday best.

The biggest shock came when M. Hamel announced that it was their last French lesson because of the Berlin order. Franz felt deep regret for wasting time fishing and sliding instead of learning French. He suddenly found the lesson easy and the books precious. Patriotism awakened in him and he understood why the old Hauser was crying. That day Franz experienced a mix of fear, guilt, sorrow and love for his language.
